Attracting Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance and mosquito bites can be downright dangerous. Nobody wants to find a mosquito hiding in places they least expect to find them.

where do mosquitoes liveJust about every house is equipped with rain gutters. They hang there below the roof eaves, just waiting for rain to fall so they can collect the water and direct it away from the walls and foundation of your house. You probably don’t think about them very often…unless you don’t have a gutter protection system installed.

Then you have to clean out the gutters now and then-sometimes two to four times per year. If your gutters were properly installed, they were sloped so that the water that comes in would run to and down the downspout.

After a rain, the water runs out and the moisture remaining on the surface dries out. Often the gutter system includes some form of gutter protection system.

What does that mean? It means gutter guards, gutter covers, gutter screens, or gutter filters that prevent leaves, pine needles, twigs, tree flowers, seeds, seed pods, and other debris from collecting there.

However, if you have no protection system, or if some sections of the covers or screens have become dislodged or damaged, some (or maybe a lot) of debris has been getting into your gutters. Once there it may pile up and stay there, until you get up on a ladder, or hire someone else to get up on a ladder, and clean all of that stuff out.

So what? Well, a level of organic debris, whether shallow or the entire depth of the rain gutter, is an invitation for various kinds of things to move in and make it home. If you were aware of the presence of these unintended houseguests, you might decide you don’t want them living there with you. If you have debris it can form a little dam inside the rain gutter. After the rainstorm is over this little dam allows a small pool of water to remain standing there.

A pool of still water, whether small or large, is exactly what mosquitoes are looking for.

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance, or they can be dangerous. Those nasty female mosquitoes that want to suck your blood need the nutrients in blood in order to produce eggs, which they lay on the surface of standing water. Each one will lay several hundred eggs. The eggs hatch in 24 to 48 hours into mosquito “wigglers.” They swim around for 7 to 10 days, turn into pupae, which then hatch into new mosquitoes, and there you are, in the yard below, just waiting to be bitten.

That crop of mosquitoes will probably not be very welcome at your evening yard party. In addition, they can be dangerous. Mosquitoes are carriers of many kinds of diseases. Malaria is one of the most infamous, although this problem has been practically eliminated in the U.S. However, West Nile Virus (WNV) has been a recent concern. Birds often carry the virus. Mosquitoes bite birds and get infected. Mosquitoes then bite humans and infect us, and we get sick.

In 2007, the CDC reported 3,630 cases of human WNV in the U.S. Of those who got sick, 123 died. That doesn’t sound like a terrible problem-unless you or a loved one was one of the 123. Moreover, no one knows what disease mosquitoes will cause us to share next.

Another group of flying pests who might decide your rain gutter is just the home they have been looking for are the various kinds of bees, wasps, and hornets. If you don’t know they are there, it can be a real surprise when you go to clean out the debris later. They think you are trying to invade their home (which you are) and they don’t understand that they have already invaded your home. Their way of telling you to go away is to sting you. Did you ever see someone try to run when they were standing on top of a ladder? Not a pretty sight-nor is it a very safe one if you are the person on the ladder.

In addition to the flying pests, other living things may take up residence. If the rain gutters are full of debris and water, some of the water is going to spill over, possibly wetting down the fascia board behind the gutter, or the wall of your house or foundation. This moist surface could be the perfect place for fungus, mold, mildew, or moss to start growing. The long-term presence of moisture and basic life forms like lichen (a kind of fungus) causes granite rock to gradually break down. Imagine what a permanent layer of moisture and growing stuff can do to your paint, siding, and foundation.

Clean out the rain gutters and install an effective protection system on your house.   Review the options at GutterSupply.com and decide what kind of system will work best for you then get to work, or call a contractor to get this project going.

Don’t Forget to Line your Pond

I remember trying to make a pond as a young child. After digging a modest hole at the end of the garden I would run back and forth with a watering can for a day attempting to fill it with water. Naturally water drained away into the ground and being knee high to a grasshopper I had absolutely no idea why I couldn’t fill my pond.

What I didn’t realise back then was the water would never stop soaking into the porous earth. Without liner, just like the sand castle moats you build on the beach, the water simply drains away.

One of the fundamentals of pond construction is ensuring it is lined. Pond liner is usually cut from a roll (much like a carpet) so you just have to calculate how much pond lining you need for the size of your new pond. Pond liner calculators are very handy for this task, just measure the depth, length & width of your pond first.

Do I need Liner Underlay?

Large pond projects definately require pond liner underlayis essential. Particularly when there is the possibility of the liner getting damaged by tree roots or sharp rocks!

Got the Liner – What next?

Once you have lined your pond and filled it with water it doesn’t end there. The water musn’t become stagnant so you need to ensure it is renewed or filtered continuously. Depending on the purpose your pond will almost certainly need a pump, particularly if you intend keeping fish! Like pond liner, choosing a pump depends on the size of the pond. The pump must be powerful enough to pump and renew all the water in the pond within a certain time frame.

I doubt I would have discontinued trying to fill that childhood pond in my childhood had I known the truth about pond liners and the science of building ponds. Racing to get back with buckets of water before the previous contents soacked into the mud and turning my parents kitchen into an indoor paddling pool was so much fun!

Gardening Tips For Beginners

Gardening is nice, mosquitos are not!

Gardening is one of the most beloved hobbies known to man. Gardening is great because it is more than just enjoyable, you can actually produce your own flowers and food with it, and so it is very productive as well. This information can be very helpful if you are a beginner in gardening and want to know how to get started.

If you are in a mosquito ridden area then start by taking steps to get rid of them or to prevent the  pesky mosquitoes  from biting, or at the very least know how to  treat mosquito bites  if you do get bitten. Then you can relax and enjoy your gardening.

Tomato Crops

One of the most common vegetable garden plants is tomatoes. Tomatoes are simple to plant and can be used in a variety of recipes. Tomatoes are actually available in over 25,000 different varieties which is quite impressive and typically, the varieties that are going to grow best in your area will always be sold in your area, making it easier and more convenient for you.

The tomato plants that you purchase will be partially grown; this is your first step. If the tomatoes are going to be grown from seeds, they will need to be planted six-eight weeks before the last frost is predicted.

To adjust the tomato plants, place then outside during the daytime once the weather warms up and there is no chance of cold air. Choose a proper planting location, and an ideal spot for tomato plants would be somewhere where they are going to get lots of sun. Work up the soil, dig the appropriate size holes, and plant the bulbs; now just remember to water them regularly.

Bulb Planting

Another common garden practice involves planting bulbs. This too is a very simple process, and in fact the most difficult part of this whole thing will probably be you deciding on which flowers you want to plant first.

Flower bulbs are easy, quick and almost foolproof. Even a complete novice with no gardening experience will be able to do this with little problems. The first procure is to work up the bed where you are going to plant. Then you use fertilizer, and plant the bulbs into holes.

These gardening tips are just a couple of the many out there. Take heed of all the great gardening tips available to you by trying new and tested tricks.

Mosquitoes And Heartworms In Dogs

None of us likes to be bitten by mosquitoes and sometimes it is easy to forget that our pets suffer from mosquito bites too.

Mosquitoes feed on blood, and they will take it where they can find it. Only the female bites, the males feed on plant nectar. While the female may have preferred hosts, she must have protein from blood to produce eggs. And, one blood meal is often not enough to produce a clutch of eggs. Often the female will feed, rest to digest the meal and feed again up to three times before she can get enough protein to produce her eggs.

So, each time your pet is outside in mosquito territory, it is a sitting target for a hungry female mosquito that is eager to reproduce.

Many species of mosquitoes will choose birds over humans or pets, but they have even been known to feed on frogs and other reptiles, if that is what they can find for a blood meal.

Most responsible pet owners know of the hazards from mosquito bites associated with heartworm disease in cats and dogs. Mosquitoes carry parasite larvae, which they transmit to your pet once they bite. The parasite larvae then migrate to the heart and major circulatory organs in your pet, where it develops into an adult worm that can reach ten inches in length.

The problem with heartworms is that they can take many years to develop into an adult that can cause symptoms in your cat or dog. Dogs are usually more at risk than cats, simply because they are usually outdoors more often. By the time the symptoms develop, treatment is long and difficult. Sometimes the pet owner is unaware of the problem until the animal simply dies during exertion, a tragic ending that is very preventable.

Protection against heartworms is as easy as a trip to your veterinarian. Many effective medicines, which are given orally, can prevent development of the larvae, if an infected mosquito bites your pet. The biggest failure of these medicines is pet owner default. They must be administered faithfully once per month with no lapse in treatment. And, just because it seems like mosquito season is at bay, don’t lapse and forget to give your pet its dose. Many mosquitoes over-winter in protected places and they arouse ready to bite long before you might expect them.

Luckily, it is now possible to get a shot for your pet that will afford protection against heartworms for up to six months. Even diligent and caring pet owners can sometimes forget about the narrow window of opportunity for administering the oral medication. This new advancement spares you and your pet the risky aftermath of those lapses.

stages of canine heartworm Now, pet owners have an even greater concern about mosquito bites to their pets. While rare, West Nile virus has been reported in both dogs and cats. There are very few reported cases of pet fatalities in dogs and cats, but the risk still exists. Instead, most of the time, the animal may test positive for the virus, without having symptoms.

If your pet has West Nile virus, it may have the following symptoms: fever, depression or lethargy, muscle weakness or spasms, impaired coordination, seizures or paralysis. If your pet has these symptoms, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Bird and horse owners should be much more concerned. West Nile virus is primarily fatal to many bird species. Crows, for example, are very susceptible to fatal cases. Sparrows, on the other hand, easily contract it, but have no symptoms. And, migratory birds like sparrows help to continue the spread of the virus because they are highly mobile.

Of those birds that are kept as pets, parrots, cockateels and parakeets are most at risk. The risk factor is lower because they are seldom outside. If your home is well sealed and has good screens, these pets should be easily protected, if kept indoors.

Horse owners are now able to protect their horses with a very effective vaccine. Horses are particularly susceptible to mosquito borne viruses, and it is difficult to keep them away from outdoor exposure, even in barns and stalls. No such vaccine exists for smaller animals.

The same thing that protects you against mosquito diseases also protect your pets.

Mosquito bite prevention!

Keep your home and yard mosquito free by being sure that mosquitoes don’t have places to breed. Avoid allowing any water to stand in containers, like buckets, birdbaths, pet bowls, gutters, storm drains, and plant saucers. Many mosquitoes need only cup of water to breed.

The FDA has traditionally advised keeping your pet indoors around dawn and dusk, because that is when many mosquito species feed. That advice is no longer enough to protect your pet. The Asian tiger mosquito is an aggressive day biter. It was imported to the United States in 1985 and is now found in 30 states. It carries both West Nile virus and heartworm parasites.

Instead, get rid of any possible breeding sites and also get a good pet insect repellant. Mosquito repellants made for humans are not to be used on pets. Never put any repellant on pets that is not DEET free. Instead get a repellant that is made for veterinary use and apply only according to directions. With your pets, you have to assume they may lick treated areas and you can’t afford to take a chance that the repellant may be toxic to them.

For example, tea tree oil is a good natural mosquito repellent for humans, but it has proved fatal to some cats that have licked it off of their fur.

And, consider getting a propane powered mosquito trap to reduce mosquito populations in your yard. They are very effective, although expensive, but actually kill hundreds of mosquitoes if used according to the manufacturers directions. Over time these devices can actually decrease mosquito populations.

Mosquitoes are here to stay. Our best defense for our pets is to know how to avoid them, and how to keep our pets safe using the latest scientific advances. And, many of the things we do to protect our pets from mosquito borne diseases are good for us too.

Treat Pet Allergies Holistically

While monthly heartworm preventive medication is important in areas affected by this worm, most pets don’t need annual chemical flea and tick control. Instead, only use this if your pet actually has fleas or ticks, or better yet, … It’s important to work with a holistic veterinarian you trust to find the best course of treatment.

Facts About The Mosquito Life Cycle

Want to know more about those buzzing little insects of the night? Here is some information on Mosquito life cycle…

what does a mosquito look like About Mosquitoes

Lets start with an interesting fact: there are 2500 different species of pesky little mosquitoes all over the world. Out of these there are 150 species in the United States of America. Of these 150 species, 52 species are in Sunny California and 19 species are in Alameda County.

The lifecycle of this tiny little insect is quite an interesting one. The most important thing for a mosquito to breed is water…any kind of water, from clean flowing creeks to dirty sewage water. Mosquitoes can breed in form of water; in face water is so important to mosquitoes that most time a mosquito is identified by the water it comes form. The life expectancy of a mosquito depends on a lot of things, its gender, the temperature, the time of year and humidity levels as well. Generally a male mosquito will live for a week whereas a female mosquito can live up to a month.

Mosquito lifecycle

The lifecycle of a mosquito is in four distinct stages. These stages are the egg, larva, pupa and adult stage.

Each stage of the mosquito lifecycle will have a unique and distinct appearance. Here are the stages of a mosquito lifecycle:

  • Eggs: the eggs of a mosquito are laid one at a time and can be found floating on the water surface. Depending on the species of the mosquito the eggs can either stuck together in the form of a raft (the culex mosquito lays 200 to 300 eggs to form a raft and the raft can be inch long) or they can be laid separately. Some species even lay the eggs on damp soil, which will be flooded later and makes ideal hatching conditions. There are some species that need to lay their eggs on fresh water surface or stagnant water surface. All eggs hatch within 48 hours of being laid, where as some tiny species of mosquito eggs will hatch within 24 hours.
  • Larva: when the eggs are hatched they are called larva or larvae for plural. The common term for mosquito larvae is wigglers or wrigglers. These larvae must live under the surface of the water for a week or two depending on the water temperature, and only come up for air and to breathe, typically a larva will have siphon tubes that allow them to breathe from under the surface of the water. The larva will typically molt 4 times and each time will grow larger, and this is because they are continuously feeding of microorganisms in the water or the organic matter found in the water. The forth molt will then change into a pupa.
  • Pupa: this stage is the resting stage and is called the pupal stage. The mosquito pupa is also called tumblers (because if it is disturbed it will dive in a tumbling motion and then surface) and they live in water for 4 daallergic reactions mosquito bitesys depending on the species. During this stage the pupa will be inactive or resting and does not eat at all. During this time the pupa breathes through breathing tubes called trumpets. This is the time during which the pupa is turning into an adult mosquito. Normally an adult mosquito takes about 48 hours to be fully formed from its pupa stage. When this time period is over and the mosquito is fully developed, the skin of the pupa will tear or split and the mosquito emerges fully developed.
  • Adult: as the pupa splits and the adult emerges, the first thing it will do is rest on the water surface, this is so that is dries up and can let its parts harden. It also needs to let the wings spread out and dry up before it can start flying.

Natural Insecticides

here is some information about natural oils and foods that can act as an insect repellent and  keep you from getting mosquito bites.

It is such a wonderful feeling when the warmer weather approaches. You can pull out your swimsuit, sunscreen, baseball glove, tent, boat, and barbecue. However, along with all those fun-in-the-summer activities comes the annoying buzz of pesky mosquitoes!
all natural pesticidesWith the recent alarming increase in mosquito-borne viruses such as the West Nile Virus, many summer revellers are worrying about more than just a few itchy bites. The appearance of these seasonal pests usually has people running for the insect repellent, but before immersing yourself in a cloud of strong-smelling chemicals, did you know that there are certain natural oils and foods that can act as an insect repellent? The lasting power of  natural mosquito repellent  may not be as long as those repellents that contain DEET or other such chemicals, but their repellent qualities are a safer choice, and that in itself is worth the extra effort involved in more frequent application.

Natural Oils

The most common natural mosquito repellents are essential oils of varying types. The most effective are said to be citronella oil and clove oil. It is important to be careful when using clove oil as it is a skin irritant, so it must be diluted and used sparingly. Other effective oils include lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon, castor, rosemary, cedar, and peppermint. When using any essential oil as a natural mosquito repellent, remember that they are solely for external use. Be sure to test the oil on a small patch of skin before applying it fully to ensure that you are not allergic to it.

Garlic
make organic pesticide
Another scientifically-proven natural mosquito repellent is garlic. If you like to relax in your backyard, but it is crowded with buzzing pests, commercial garlic sprays are available, and can be used on your outdoor garden. Studies have also shown that applying a jelly-based compound containing garlic on your skin can help keep mosquitoes away. However, its signature pungent aroma may also repel your friends and family! It is important to consult your doctor before using garlic as an insect repellent as it contains high amounts of allicin and could cause allergic reactions and/or skin problems. If slathering yourself or your garden with garlic is unappealing to you, you could add garlic to your daily diet. If a large amount of garlic is ingested, the odor tends to seep out of the body’s pores, acting as a natural barrier against mosquitoes.

Making your own

It is possible to make your own natural mosquito repellent spray. Using a 10-to-1 ratio, add one part of the listed essential oils above to 10 parts of rubbing alcohol, vodka, witch hazel or olive oil, and shake well before using. Mosquitoes are usually attracted to perfumes and flowery aromas, therefore adding a few drops of the listed essential oils to your shampoo and liquid soap can help counteract the fragrances in these products and keep mosquitoes away.

Don’t Sweat It!

Aside from using a natural  mosquito repellent  knowing when your body is most vulnerable is a plus. Carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes, therefore when you are hot or have been exercising, mosquitoes may find you extra-tasty. They are also attracted to moisture and that includes perspiration. Exercising, as well as eating certain foods high in salt and potassium, will make your system release a greater amount of lactic acid, which will lure the mosquito population. It is not only perfumes, shampoos, body lotions, body washes, and sunscreen on your body that make you vulnerable to bites, but also the subtle fragrances of dryer sheets and fabric softeners in your clothes.

Natural Alternatives To Pesticides Use

Having access to natural insecticides, particularly as a  mosquito bite prevention technique is easier than you think.

There are natural alternatives that do not make you glow in the dark after you have applied them to your home and garden.

mosquito repellent plant and flowers

Homemade natural insecticide does not only help our planet but they also cut the immediate risk to our families and loved ones. Many natural insecticides can be easily and quickly made up at home.

Not only are natural insecticides less toxic in general, but also many of them are more effective than their commercial counterpart. Making your own can save you some money in the long run, as commercial insect repellents can be costly and not necessarily affective.

Garden mix. Take the dried leaves of lavender, tobacco, rosemary, and Pyrethrum daisy. You can then mix all of these together and use it as a powder, or they can be steeped overnight in water and then strained into a spray bottle. Each of these plants can be used individually but often gardeners will combine them.

mosquito repellers
During the summer months we spend more time outdoors children are often in the grass playing late into the evening and many of us worked in our gardens once the temperature has cooled down. It seems as the sun goes down the bugs come out. Check out this recipe for natural insecticides homemade insect repellent that can be safely used instead of those toxic commercial sprays. This just a sampling of what can be made to help you in your quest to eradicate pests around your home.

Soak the following in water:
Lemon peels and/or orange peels
Mint leaves and/or sage leaves
Lavender leaves

If you can soak them all overnight, in the morning you’ll have a strong mixture. After straining this use 1/2 of this mixture and add some witch-hazel to make up the other half. Simply lightly spray yourself down with this mixture and you should be good to go in the evening. This natural insecticide is safe on the children and pets as well.
mosquito control products - lemon peel
A natural insecticide that works as a flea repellent for dogs that will save you a lot of money can be whipped up in the kitchen in a matter of minutes. It should be noted however that this repellent should not be used on cats as citrus is toxic to them in large amounts.

You basically make a tea out of citrus peels, it doesn’t matter what type, lemon peels, or orange peels, any type of citrus peels will work. You put the peels in water and boil. After they have cooled, you strain the liquid and then rub it into his or her coat, during the final rinse of the bath. This kills fleas as well as acts as a repellent for any that might be lurking around the yard. Do not use on cats, as it is toxic to them!

As we all know citronella has been added to candles and sprays for quite some time. Citronella is an excellent repellent and can be classified in homemade natural insecticides. Also chamomile seems to make mosquitoes run the other way . Combining about 1 ounce each of these two plants leaves together and boiling them in a gallon of water, is a highly effective repellent.

Another natural insecticide that has been around for centuries in the Middle East is Neem oil. Although in the United States it has gained in popularity in the past few years. Neem oil is biodegradable and very low toxicity and seems to be in everything from toothpaste to pharmaceuticals. This natural insecticide works as a systemic that is absorbed into the plant and then ingested by feeding insects.

Neem oil is highly effective as an natural insecticide for the treatment of head lice, but it may be used in the garden, you can mix 1 ounce of Neem Oil to 1.3 gallons of water to spray around your yard.
mosquito plant - neem oil
Utilizing homemade natural insecticide within the garden and around your home may take a little effort in their preparation but in the long run and not only will save money, but you are reducing the risk to your family and the environment. There are many more powerful natural insecticide products that will do the job, you just need guidance as to which formulas will be effective for you. The great thing is that you will have an unlimited supply of product which has cost next to nothing and does an excellent job as well.
